Why
are they so determined to stop a logical
reform to save taxpayers hundreds of
millions of dollars a year and provide
common sense sentencing which
distinguishes between serious, violent
crimes and petty offenses? Why?
Sacramento Bee reporter Andy Furillo
recently found the answer when he inquired
about the prison guards union's historical
reluctance to support prison education
programs. Furillo wrote:
"CCPOA, from our point of
view, has not historically supported
prison education programs," said Andy
Hsia-Coron, chairman of Unit 3 of the
Service Employee International Union,
which represents 1,200 prison educators
and librarians. "They
understand that recidivism is their bread
and butter. They want to make sure that as
many people as possible are sent to prison
for as long as possible." |
