YES
ON 66 "FIX THREE STRIKES" CAMPAIGN
CALLS
ON STATIONS NOT TO AIR FALSE AD
The
Yes on 66 campaign, in a letter to
California
television stations today, called upon
California
television stations not to air ads featuring
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger making patently
false statements.
In
the commercials, purchased by Schwarzenegger's
California Recovery Team, Schwarzenegger states
falsely that "26,000 dangerous criminals
will be released from prison" by
Proposition 66. An identical claim was ordered
stricken from the Voter Information Guide
because a Sacramento Superior Court judge
declared it "patently false" and
"mathematically impossible." The
governor was a party to that lawsuit, and is
aware that the statement has been found to be
false, yet repeats the falsehood in TV ads.
The
non-partisan Legislative Analyst has concluded
that only people serving life terms for
non-violent offenses may apply for resentencing
under Proposition 66. According to the
Department of Corrections, that's about 4,200
people.
"The
airing of patently false advertisements violates
the public's trust that only truthful
information be disseminated to the public,"
Yes on 66 attorney Lance Olson wrote the
stations.
Yes
on Prop. 66 Campaign Director Steve Hopcraft
said, “Even though it’s a steep hill to
climb to get stations to pull these false and
misleading ads, we’re going to push them to do
so. The governor was told by the court that the
statement he makes in his ad is false, and it
was stricken from his ballot argument. Yet the
governor is making the statement he knows is
false in this TV ad.”
