ANALYSIS:
SCHWARZENEGGER
CLAIMS "PATENTLY FALSE"
A major
California
newspaper's analysis of Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger's ad opposing Proposition 66, the
Fix Three Strikes measure, concludes that the
Governor's claims have been repeatedly refuted
and are patently false.
The
analysis in the Oct. 27 San Francisco Chronicle
notes that the governor echoes opponents',
repeatedly debunked, claims that 26,000 inmates
would be freed.
"That number is only a guess based on how
courts might interpret the law, however, and it
has been refuted by at least two legal
analyses," the Chronicle analysis says.
"The nonpartisan Legislative
Analyst's Office, which studied the proposition,
does not agree, and a state Superior Court judge
who reviewed arguments written for the ballot
called the claim that the proposition would lead
to the release of 26,000 criminals 'patently
false.' "
"We're
disappointed in the Governor for repeating bogus
arguments that have been repeatedly proven to be
patently false," said Yes on 66 leader Joe
Klaas. "Proposition 66 keeps violent
criminals in prison where the belong, provides
appropriate sentences for lesser offenders, and
saves taxpayers billions of dollars. It's a
needed, common-sense reform."
